Minecraft (as of 1.7.3) 8/31/11
Hello everybody, first review in months, so I might be a little (a lot) rusty so beat with me please. I had a minecraft review months ago but It was based on hate and jealousy. Months ago I was running on a laptop that was older than the dinosaurs, I would be lucky to get 8 fps (if it even opened). So I blamed the game for my computer's problems. Anyway, enough about me, you came to hear about Minecraft right?
Let me say that Minecraft is definitely in my top 5 games already and it isn't even finished. The full game is set for a release of November 11th 2011, (same as skyrim!). So the fact that it is that amazing already is just...awe inspiring. So are you wondering what the hell I am babbling about, pay attention.
Minecraft is an indie game that is in beta, it has been released to the public for $20, or you can play creative for free. Now at first glance you will say something along the lines of “whoa it's legos evolved”. Well that is basically what creative is. It is a good way to see if Minecraft is your style though. In creative mode, there are many different blocks, with different textures (different uses in beta mode). In creative mode, you have unlimited of each of the blocks available in creative (a mere fraction of those in beta). You can build whatever you feel like. So if this is your style, head to minecraft.net and check it out.
Now for the beta, take everything you know about minecraft, and flush it down the toilet. The only thing the same is that everything is blocky. In this mode, you start with nothing except the hands on your arms (wait what?). You must find supplies to make tools. Find some trees and take the wood, create a sword,a pickaxe, shovel or make a starter home to protect you from the mobs (more about them later). The wooden tools are the worst of the worst. But it allows you to harvest stone, which becomes cobblestone. This is your main tools for the first few days in minecraft. Each block has it's own strengths, and weaknesses. Gold is more valuable than stone. Diamond is more valuable that gold (you know the deal).
As you hopefully know, Minecraft has it's own day/night cycle. In the night, monsters come out, so a little info on the mobs.
Skeltons are these creatures that are weak but attack from a range with bows. Zombies are the most popular, they are solid and slow. They do a moderate amount of melee damage. And creepers... these foul beasts that sneak up behind you, all you hear is a SSSSSSS noise, than an explosion.
The absolute best part of minecraft is that you can make whatever the hell is in your sick minds. Want aladdin to hump a smurf? Then help yourself, your imagination is the limit. The ability to make your dream homes is a important (in not the most) feeling of the game.
The community content is also breath taking. Change how you look, how all the blocks look and almost everything else. The amount of mods is also awe inspiring, my Minecraft blog has all info on that.
Now what keeps this from a 5/5? mainly the fact of the multiplayer. It works and is innovative but it needs work, having to manually type in the IP gets boring fast. And random server crashes don't help either.
Anyhoo if you want more Minecraft information, then head on over to my blog all about Minecraft.
I don't take any rights to this game-this amazing game was made by Notch.
